The history of higher post-secondary learning is a long, interesting, and fruitful one. Universities date back close to a thousand years and have since grown, expanded, and now become a center for the future of every nation. The fast increasing impact that technology has had on education has been closely linked and now their future, success, and fate are carefully intertwined. Because of technology we are now seeing education finally moving away from the traditional setting and expanding its access to adhere to demands of work schedule and location.
The word University comes from Latin word meaning “a whole”. Universities were largely established to educate the clergy but because of demand of the merchant class to develop skills in reading, writing, and mathematics the curriculum was amplified. Student and masters were influenced by other industries and, following societies example, created guilds of their own. The guilds created a standard that anyone who wanted to become a teacher was required to accomplish six years of liberal arts studies. Most universities followed this example and added other requirements such as the University of Paris requiring a future teacher to be 20 years old at least. The University of Paris statues also read “[sic] is to promise what he will lecture for at least two years.” Theology was still the champion at universities and pretty much dictated the school curriculum and student life. Becoming a Theology teacher also had a stricter set of requirements that had to be achieved before being accepted such as being at least 35 years of age and completing 8 years of further education. ...other challenge is the demand of online courses far exceeds the offerings and current architecture design of the network. Universities responded that expanding the online courses they offer is their number one priority.
From the theologian based universities to apprenticeships the history and architecture of higher education was a rich and simple one that had seen little change. For this reason is why the emergence, acceptance, and increasing expansion of distance learning and computer based courses is so remarkable. For something that has been so traditional in its structure to commence in overhauling it at such fast pace is to be applauded. With the help of technology education will be much more accessible to every demographic of the population regardless of wealth, schedule, or location in the future.
