While exploring the literature I found that there is much literature on the topic of technology in education in general and there seems to be an increasing emerging body of literature exploring handheld technology. Therefore, in this review of the literature I will examine the literature on technology in general before moving on to review the few studies that have been carried out exploring handheld technology in education. I will begin by looking at the importance of the place of technology in the curriculum. Following on from this I will examine the importance of teacher attitude in regards to technology integration. I will then explore literature regarding barriers to technology integration and then conclude the literature review by discussing what needs to be done to help teachers integrate technology into their practice.
Background
Recently technology has begun playing an increasingly important role education. Prensky (2011) established the terms ‘digital natives’ and ‘digital immigrants’. He considers students of today to be ‘digital natives’ meaning they have grown up in an environment surrounded by technology. Whereas the latter term ‘digital immigrants’ refers to an older generation who have previously lived in a non-digital world. Moreover he goes on to suggest that technology is as important as reading and basic arithmetic. Many other studies covey a similar idea of technology being important in today’s society. Traxler (2010) states that handheld technologies are difficult to ignore and that they are becoming embedded into modern culture. Ertmer and Ottenbreit-Leftwich (2010) note that technology is used in every sector of society now. They elaborate on this asserting that technology is used all across the job market ...
