How to best educate youth is a question that has been around forever and will never go away. There have been many debates about what way is the most efficient, the most effective. What is the best class size? What student-to-teacher ratio works best? How long should students be in school each day? Should students have a summer break or attend school year round? Education is an immensely vital subject, and thus one that will always create questions. These questions change as the world transforms. Today, with the influx of technology, one wonders how education will change for the current generation and generations to come. So just how much of a role should technology play? Should kindergarteners receive iPads, as they have in Auburn, Maine (Srivastava)? Should computers replace books? Just how much of a place does technology have in schools? There is not a simple answer; there are many facts to support both sides. The conventional way of using books to educate presents many benefits including: simplicity of use, dependability, short-term affordability, and tangibility. The up and coming way of using technology has an abundance of positives as well including: increased opportunities, less long-term cost, up-to-date centralized information, and less waste. Technology and books each provide unique strengths; however, a combination of the two allows the optimization of resources and learning capability.
Books provide many advantages over computers, some obvious and some not so obvious. First of all, books are tangible. A student can hold them in their hand, flip through the pages, and make them their own. They can make notes in the book if they have to, highlight portions of the text, or dog-ear the pages.
